Flipping Stigma
A diagnosis of dementia can increase a person’s sense of vulnerability. Not only are people faced with challenging cognitive changes but too often many also face needless stigma and discrimination that can make the experience worse.
As such, the discrimination caused by stigma that accompanies a diagnosis of dementia needs to be “flipped on its ear!”
iCON
Established in 2007, UBC’s interCultural Online health Network (iCON) is a community-driven health promotion initiative working to advance person- and family-centred care, that is culturally appropriate and culturally safe. To achieve this mission iCON co-develops, with communities, linguistically and culturally tailored health information, empowering multicultural patients and families with the skills and knowledge to better manage chronic diseases, navigate primary care and use digital tools to support their health. iCON also partners with healthcare systems and providers to inform meaningful community engagement, providing a pathway for multicultural and Indigenous voices to shape healthcare which meets the needs of diverse communities and to improve culturally safe care. iCON is proudly supported by the B.C. Ministry of Health’s Patients as Partners initiative. For more information please contact us at icon.support@ubc.ca or visit our website www.iconproject.org.
