Nav-CARE: Compassionate Dementia Inclusive Communities Initiative

A new service that provides volunteer navigators to support persons living with dementia and their care partners to live longer and better in community.

Brella is proud to announce the  launch of a new support service for our community members. The service, called Nav-CARE: Compassionate Dementia Inclusive Communities, uses specially trained volunteer navigators to help persons living with dementia and their care partners, access resources and services in their community, while providing companionship and emotional support.

Having a Nav-CARE volunteer does not cost anything.

Volunteer navigators are matched with persons living at home and then visit them regularly on a schedule and time that is convenient for them. While there, volunteer navigators assist persons to be involved in what is important to them, connect them to community services that they need, and help them find information to make good decisions. Nav-CARE is ideal for persons who have declining health, who are living alone, who are having difficulty getting out into the community, or who are just feeling the need for some extra support.

Nav-CARE was developed in response to what persons living at home say they need. The service has been implemented and evaluated, with good results, in sites across Canada and internationally. Persons who have received Nav-CARE services appreciate the relationship they develop with their volunteer navigator and report improvements in their knowledge and well-being.

“By having a volunteer navigator, you have someone who is committed to you, cares about you, has the time to listen to you, and is able to understand what you’re going through” (Nav-CARE participant)
